Vitamin C is used by most people looking for a natural way of treating the common cold. The reason for their choice was based on the work carried out by Professor Linus Pauling. Many people have said that Linus Pauling’s work has not been vindicated in recent trials. However, I do not believe this to be true. Recent double-blind trials on vitamin C have shown that the symptoms of the common cold can be dramatically reduced by the taking of 2000 mg of vitamin C daily. It is probable that ascorbic acid assists the immune system and acts against pathogens, especially bacteria and viruses.
Vitamin C levels of white blood cells have been shown to decrease with depressed immunological function. Viral infection rapidly depletes leucocyte ascorbate and varying degrees of nonspecific immunosuppression are now recognised to accompany such infections.
At my clinic using a combination containing garlic, echinacea, beta-carotene, vitamin E and vitamin C, in the treatment of many viral and virus-related illnesses has had successful results. The most common would be patients presenting with influenza or common colds and although full double-blind trials have not been carried out, patient trials have demonstrated dramatic improvement.
I have also used this combination of herbs and nutrients when treating patients suffering from post-viral syndrome and those who are constantly contracting viral infections. The results of these patient studies have shown a marked improvement in the patients’ resistance to infection.

Cystitis is the inflammation of the bladder. The symptoms are usually a burning feeling during urination and a need to urinate frequently. The inflammation may be caused by a secondary infection in the urethra, the kidney, or by retained urine in the bladder caused by an enlarged prostate gland.
Cystitis is most common among women under 50 years of age, particularly during pregnancy. Sexual intercourse can lead to inflammation that can spread to the bladder by way of the urethra. This is often called ‘honeymoon cystitis’. Poor hygiene and tampons can also cause inflammation.
If you are a frequent sufferer of cystitis there are a number of things that can be done to help prevent further attacks and relieve the symptoms.
1. Wear cotton underwear, never synthetic.
2. Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water daily. Water helps flush the kidneys, bladder, and urethra.
3. Eat alkali-forming foods (see list in acid/alkali food chart). All vegetables and fruits are alkaline after digestion and should be eaten every day. Your diet should be 80% alkali-forming foods and 20% acid-forming foods. Eating foods in these proportions will help maintain good health and prevent infection.
There are a number of herbs that can relieve the symptoms and clear up the infection quickly. They are corn silk, boldo marshmallow, couch grass and bearberry.
SUPPLEMENTS

Oat bran contains the highest percentage of soluble fibre at 4.8%, followed by rice bran at 2.5% and wheat bran at 2.0%. The latest technical information shows that rice bran and oat bran are equal in their ability to lower total blood cholesterol levels.
Rice bran has five times the insoluble dietary fibre of oat bran and more soluble fibre than wheat bran. It can help maintain a healthy colon and promote regularity, as well as caring for the cardiovascular system by helping lower cholesterol.
Psyllium is a natural grain and the husks make an excellent fibre, helping lower cholesterol and maintaining regularity. Psyllium was recently reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine 148, 292, 1988, which stated that psyllium, by removing bile acid from the intestine and preventing their reabsorption, lowered blood cholesterol levels. This action is the result of the use by the body of cholesterol in the manufacture of more bile salts. y
